                  FAQs

How is Ashtanga different from other yoga?
Ashtanga follows a traditional and structured sequence of postures, where the breath starts and ends the movement. Most postures are usually held for five breaths whilst a few postures are held longer.  No blocks, straps or props are generally used but you are welcome to use your own.

                  What is Jivamukti yoga?
Jivamukti yoga integrates the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of yoga practices into the modern lifestyle-without losing sight of the ancient and universal goal of yoga which is liberation.  In a Jivamukti class students will experience a dynamic flowing practice, sastra (scriptures), bhakti (devotion), ahimsa (non-violence), nada (music or vibration) and dhyana (meditation).  At the core of Jivamukti is kindness and compassion for all beings including animals and non-separation from others.

                  Is yoga for everyone?
If you are reasonably fit you should have no problem.  If you have never practiced yoga before take it easy in the first few classes as you build strength and endurance.  Yoga is for anyone and can be modified as needed but as always listen to your body.

What do I need to bring to class?
An open mind, loose and comfortable clothing and a mat and towel.  Spare mats are provided however you are encouraged to bring your own.

Do classes run during the school holidays?
Yes, classes run continuously through the year except during the Christmas break.

How often should I practice yoga?
For best results follow a daily practice. Each practice doesn’t have to be long and super hard. Just do what you can do but do something every day even if it is just a few sun salutations.

Is it best to eat and drink before and during yoga?
Yoga is best done on an empty stomach as your body will feel lighter and you can move around more easily. If you need to try to eat something light at least 2 to 3 hours before class.

What if I have an injury or medical condition?
If you have been advised by your health professional (e.g. doctor) not to learn or do yoga then you should head this advice.  Yoga has been known to assist in relieving physical, mental and emotional blockages and injury recovery.  If you need to, simply adjust or modify the posture to suit where you are at that moment and let the teacher know about your injury.

                  What is the class etiquette?
Classes start on time so please respect other people in the class by turning off your mobile phone, taking off your shoes and making sure you arrive early so as not to disturb.  Please be mindful of others in the class.  If you need to leave class early please do so quietly.
